The secret to making millions is doing projects worth millions. It may sound simple, but Bill Gibson, top sales consultant and author, says this is where most entrepreneurs go wrong.
“I am constantly being asked: ‘Bill, how do you land million rand projects? I never seem to get any of those.’ And I always answer by asking, ‘Well, how many million rand proposals do you have out?’ Invariably, the answer is none. Now how can you expect to make millions if you are only pitching in the thousands? It makes no sense.”
According to Gibson, making a lot of money relatively quickly is really quite a logical process. The first step is to decide how much money you want. Once you have a figure in mind, make a list of all the companies and organisations that could easily afford to pay that figure, provided of course you supply them with a good reason. Next, determine the benefits you can provide and make them an offer they cannot refuse.
“You need to stop thinking along the lines of scarcity and focus on abundance,” says Gibson. “Instead of saying, ‘Oh no, I need R100 000 to pay these bills,’ rather think, ‘What are all the things I can do to make R100 000?’ This opens the mind and you become aware of the intellectual property you have at your disposal. It allows you to see opportunities instead of problems.” He adds that it is imperative for entrepreneurs to keep their eyes and ears open to topical issues. “I think it is easier to make a quick buck when you have lots of experience. So the best advice I can offer is to keep an eye on changing circumstances and then be ready to move quickly when opportunities arise.”
